This image of Vesuvius is taken from the Dutch Natuurkundige Verhandelingen, of Verzameling van Stukken (1772-1777), a scientific periodical published in Amsterdam and offering the latest in European scientific findings for a Dutch-language audience. The Natuurkundige offered essays by authorities such as Buffon, Lavoisier, and Linnaeus, translated into Dutch.
